Colombia's fight for freedom was made possible through persistent efforts from the people of Colombia and their leaders who shocked the world with their successful revolution in an unfavored match up against Spain. The Colombian Revolution would have never been successful if it weren't for the heroic leaderships of Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Paula Santander. One of the most important keys to the success of the Revolution against Spain was the aid the millions of Colombians supporting Bolivar’s movement provided. Mass frustration against Spain led to the Colombian Revolution; however, the revolution would not have been successful without the leadership of Simon Bolivar and Francisco de Paula Santander. Francisco de Paula Santander was Bolivar’s right-hand man and won some of the revolution's most important battles by himself. In April of 1819 Bolivar gave Francisco de Paula Santander one of his most important tasks as vice president and arguably his most important task during the Revolution. Bolivar left Francisco de Paula Santander in charge of “liberating the Casanare region, where he defeated royalist forces” and proved his military power not only to the people of Colombia but to his Spanish opponents as well (COLOMBIA - A Country Study). In August of 1819, Bolivar left Colombia to go liberate present-day Ecuador, Peru, and Bolivia. Bolivar left Santander the mission of defeating what was left of Spain's forces in Colombia which he did in the same month Bolivar left at the famous Battle of Boyaca.
