From the moment he first laid eyes on her, they were on a Hong Kong subway. Simon is intrigued by Amy and daydreams about the chance to encounter, but he does not have the nerve to even say a word to her. Simon is inexperienced and is not an outspoken guy, but when he realizes that he is going to fail out of school, he figures he has nothing else to lose and works up the courage to speak to her. But things do not go according to Simon’s plan because Amy does not speak Chinese and Simon is failing English. Simon stumbles his way through conversations with Amy and tries to give this whole English thing another try in order to win Amy's heart. The world is like a distraction for Simon because in the novel, “He focused on shop signs, light fixtures, a magazine cover” (19). Simon wanted to see her, but instead tried not to look for her. Simon always sees Subway Girl on the Hong Kong subway, but she does not notice him. Simon’s second view of the world is poor. “He took the middle stairs down to Mongkok station away from the beggars and the family of cheap-toy-salesmen” (19). Simon does not try to make himself out to be superior to anyone else. Simon and his family live in their shop of business, where they make bowls for a living. Although Simon does not have much, he does not have less than the cheap-toy-salesmen and beggars on the streets. Lastly, Simon views the world as diverse because “It was cool seeing people from different schools going in and out of cafés, dawdling in front of shops, paying attention to bargains and girlfriends, and dodging minibuses” (19). Even though Mongkok had always been busy, with tons of different people roaming the streets that made it impossible to walk in a straight line, Simon liked it that
