Sin and guilt, everybody has done it, everyone has it. The Scarlet Letter is based on life’s temptations, the results of them, and how people treat you afterwards (Hawthorn). The dictionary definition of sin is an offence against religious or moral law. Just as the dictionary definition of guilt is the fact of having committed a breech of conduct. In other words sin is doing something that is against your or another’s morals. And guilt is what you feel after you have done something that you consider wrong. Hester creates sin by committing adultery. Hester rids herself of guilt by wearing her sin on her bosom in the form of the scarlet letter A, standing on the scaffold (Hawthorn 56), also she volunteers.. The Puritan belief itself knew the dangers of sin, which is why that the first thing that the first puritans did when they came over was build a prison for decent criminals and a cemetery for severe criminals.
