Sin is an important part of the biblical story. Everything in the Bible after Genesis 3 is a product of the original sin committed in that chapter by Adam and Eve. With this paper, I will outline the origin of sin, the consequences present because of sin and God’s plan to overcome it. The first important question we must ask is what is sin? In Genesis 2:16-17 God told Adam he was free to eat from any tree in the garden, but he was not allowed to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. God makes it clear that “in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die” (ESV). God gave Adam a commandment, one that he expected to be obeyed. It was not by any means a difficult one to follow. In Genesis 3:1 he asks, “Did God actually say, you shall not eat any of the fruit of the garden?” What was said was that they could eat any fruit except for the tree of knowledge”. The Bible does not specifically state that there was a verbal interaction between Adam and Eve before Adam too took the fruit, though I am sure if there were it would be something like “see, I have even the fruit and I am not dead” Matthew Henry writes in his commentary on the Bible “It is his policy to send temptations by hands we do not suspect, and by those that have most influence upon us”. And this is what Satan did, he knew he could tempt Eve and then once he had her, used her to also ensnare Adam and sin came into the world. While eating one fruit in itself does not seem like any large thing, it was the one rule that God put in place for the couple. “The creator who has put everything else under the rule of human stewards, leaves just one tantible reminder in their glorious world that he alone is the source and sustainer of all things, including their very lives” (Bartholomew & Goheen, 2009, p. 34). Even though it seems like maybe a minor disobedience, it is Adam and Eve choosing to disregard the will of their maker and choose their own
