“Confession of sin shuts the mouth of hell and opens the gates of heaven” by Thomas Watson. In the story “The Rime of The Ancient Mariner” by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. The story starts with a man, who was a wedding guest and sees an old man with a yellow eyes and it catches his attention. After a while the old man hypnotized the wedding guest. He starts telling a story about a Mariner who was out at sea and got lost and encountered supernatural events. His experience reflects the Christian faith and makes reference to the Bible. For example,when the sailors left shore the story describes that they could not see the church nor the lighthouse. To Conclude, at the end of the story, after the Mariner finish the story Coleridge states “ Turned from the bridegroom door. He went like one that hath been stunned, and is of sense forlorn; a sadder and a wiser man, he rose the morrow morn” (Coleridge 602). After the Mariner told the story to the wedding guest he was surprising he became wiser but yet sadder. The wedding guest may have had sin in his past that he needs to let go and because of that he is going to hell and he finally realize it. The wedding guest may have felt how the mariner felt when he was lonely and isolated. He may have gotten away from God so he feels like he has the Albatross in his neck and feeling the penalty of sin in his life. He became a wiser man because he listened to what the Mariner experienced and does not what to be in that position. Those are the reason why the “The Rime of The Ancient Mariner” had Christian elements in the story. The Albatross as an example of Jesus Christ when he died in the cross for the sins of the people and also when the Mariner was in purgatory with life and death. The other example was, God made everything and because he made everything they needed to be respected.
