“Single Black Female” by Lisa B. Thompson is a two-woman play that dives into the lives of two women who are middle-class black women who are trying to find love in modern America while facing stereotypes and obstacles. The two women play a multitude of characters that show how they face these obstacles and dating situations, this can be seen with them shopping for clothes or trying online dating for the first time. While I was attending the first showing of the play, I thought of all the times, I have heard so many black women talk about the same issues brought up in the play in real life. I actually believe that due to this I would still enjoy this even if I arrived at the play in the worst mood ever. The play was able to make me sympathize with the sad scenes and laugh when there was a funny scene or moment. “Single Black Female”, is a play that can transform the attitude of its viewers. During the play, I liked how included a scene where they had the two women played by Amber Hill and Jessika Williams, at the class reunion had them talking down on past classmates to show their insecurities while having a humorous mood about it all. Another thing that I love about this play was that it was made to be placed during a more modern time. Ms. Hill and Ms. Williams were able to ping-pong off one another and only had a couple of times where it seemed that they may have fumbled or forgotten their lines. The thing with that is that they knew they could not let these few times ruin the whole performance and kept going and did a wonderful job at it. Another aspect that I really enjoyed about the play was that the women were college educated. That the playwright and director did not have the stereotypical black woman shown. That they showed how the women wanted more than a ‘baby daddy’ and someone who can just offer them ‘good sex’, they want someone who could be a good husband and father to their kids. I believe that with this viewpoint it allowed for black women to be seen in a light that many times are not shown. That the media does not
