It’s monday morning and you walk into your favorite place for breakfast. You make your order and as you go to pay, the cashier asks “Would you like to donate a penny for charity?”. Your initial reaction may be to think “What is a single penny going to do for a charity? You can’t even buy a bowl of rice with that”. While this thought may be entirely understandable on an individual level, if one begins to think on a larger scale, the flaw in such narrow minded thinking becomes apparent. A single penny may not help; however, what if everybody who visits that shop in a day donates a single penny? Those collective pennies could feed an entire family. When learning a new piece at the piano, I must progress note by note, measure by measure. Each individual note or chord alone is not particularly intriguing, but after many hours spent learning how to perfectly caress each key, then the music can come alive. The notes and measures melt together to become a single beautiful and cohesive work of art; however, every note in the flow of the music is important, for one missed or misplaced note can harm or destroy the continuity. This same principle applies in math. While enthusiastically working through an extensive problem, every calculation is integral to obtaining the answer. A flipped sign or a misplaced decimal hidden away in a page full of work can entirely alter the answer. Of course, this unity applies not only to music and math but to every other aspect of life. Each stride in my morning run takes me one step closer to my destination, each individual person surrounding me makes up the community I live in, every painting is composed of individual brush strokes, and each “Eureka!” moment is the culmination of numerous small efforts and
