Dylan Norton Mr. Caloca English 3 Plus 9 September 2014 Sinners Essay Throughout the novel “Sinners in The Hand of an Angry God” by Jonathan Edwards, Edwards speaks passionately about those who try and desert the will of God. This novel is best described through the historical lens. The historical lens is the best way to analyze his speech, because of the time period and, what the Puritans cultural beliefs were. Edwards scared the Puritans to return back to religion, and stay with the God by threatening them with God’s wrath over those who desert him. In the 1700’s, the Puritans beliefs on religion was so strong, that Edward could use it against them, he convinced the puritans that God was the most righteous path. For example Edwards states that “His anger is as great toward them as to those that are actually suffering the executions of the fierceness of his wrath in hell and they have done nothing in the least to appease or abate that anger…” (Edwards 106). He proves that many are being prosecuted for accusations of others; their religion is incredibly large in Puritan culture. Edwards states that “the Devil is waiting for them if they don’t choose the path of God.” (Edwards 107). Edwards also states that “The use of this awful subject may be for awakening unconverted persons in this congregation” (Edwards 106). He proves that those that aren’t in the path of God, or have deserted him are sinners. Due to the Puritans strong belief in God, they automatically start edging toward religion over other subjects. Puritans were disgraced upon, and told off by one another depending on their beliefs; it wasn’t till later, that religious freedom was tolerable. Edwards’s states that “You will only know that one point remains; how the majority views you in the hand of God, for who knows the true power of God?” (Edwards 110). He is reassuring that the way of God is not only the right path, but the path that will bring you the most non stressful life; it’s the right way to live. Edwards reminds the Puritans that live the life of God is the right way, due to freedom to heaven, and the power to relieve your sins and mistakes; Edwards knows that those who do not become born again will be damned to hell. The Puritans viewed religion with all seriousness, accusing people of even going against god was punishable by death.
