In Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God (1741), Jonathon Edwards gives a sermon saying that God is angry with everyone. The Puritans in the beginning believed that their fate was predetermined for them. Fate for most was hell. In order to escape hell and the angry wrath of God they had to come to accept and know God. Man cannot determine if God is sad, happy, or angry, but whatever His emotions are it is a result of our interactions with each other. What Edwards says is an assumption that man is predestined to hell when in reality it is based off each person’s own choices and decisions. Each and every individual is born with a light. People are born unpolluted and they are innocent in the early years of life. As the innocent natural man is exposed to the world their light slowly begins to burn out. Some continue their life seeking out more goodness, but overall the garbage of the world overtakes them. Why do so many people give into the temptations of the world? Selfish people are only concerned with themselves. Edwards refers to the natural man as “miserable creatures” (Edwards 120), “wicked men” (Edwards 122), and “unconverted men” (Edwards 122). Selfish could be synonymous to wicked and miserable. When one is so selfish it has got a hold of them that is hard to get away from. Edwards says “O sinner! Consider the fearful danger you are in,”(Edward 124) implying that once you are so far into the selfish lifestyle there is no turning back. Once God has taken offense by your actions you cannot “keep off the flames of wrath” (Edwards 124). Selfishness becomes a way of life.
