Sir Arthur Conan Doyle Sir Arthur Conan Doyle was a man of great success, he achieved much in his seventy one years of life. From writing bestsellers to going to war he never seemed to disappoint.

Doyle was born on May twenty second in Edinburgh, Scotland; the child of Charles and Mary Doyle. He was a brother to nine siblings, six of whom survived. At school Arthur excelled at many sports, attributes that he later gave on to Sherlock is his writings. At the age of seventeen he entered medical school at the University of of Edinburgh Medical School where he was to earn his certifications as a physician, a profession he later gave onto Watson. Shortly after this his father, Charles fell ill and Conan was forced to become the main source of income for his abundant family. He worked as a ship's doctor for some time but then shortly moved onto his own medical practice in Portsmouth. Whenever he had free time he made sure to write. In 1885 Doyle married Louise Hawkins and had two children with her, before she passed from tuberculosis in 1906. He then later went on to marry Jeanne Leckie in 1907 and had three more children with her. Before Louise had passed Conan had been getting pretty good at his writing, his third attempt at a novel was A Study in Scarlet, the story which introduced Sherlock Holmes to the world. This was published in Mrs. Beeton's Christmas annual, in 1887. Encouraged by publishers to keep writing, Conan Doyle wrote his second Holmes mystery, The Sign of the Four, in 1890. These novels became so successful, and the stories which followed, that Conan Doyle could afford to give up his medical practice and devote himself to writing full time. The first Sherlock Holmes short story, A Scandal in Bohemia, appeared in The Strand Magazine in 1891, to be followed by two dozen more stories over the next several years.
