Sir Gawain & the Green Knight In the action filled and exciting poem, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, Pearl Poet tells a story of the courage and sacrifice a knight makes to protect a village. Written in the Fourteenth Century, the character demonstrates what it means to be a chivalrous and brave knight through three things, bravery, honour, and courage. Sir Gawain’s bravery is shown in the very beginning of this heroic poem. When the Green Knight challenges anyone to duel him in a battle that would definitely end in one of the two knights dying, Sir Gawain steps up and accepted this suicidal challenge. He did this for two reasons. The first is to protect the village from this mysterious Green Knight and whatever he would do if nobody would accept his competition. 2 Thessalonians says, “But the Lord is faithful, and he will strengthen you and protect you from the evil one.” Just like how God protects us from Satan, Sir Gawain was protecting the people from the Green Knight. He could have easily just ditched him and ran from the battle. If he would have done this then nothing harmful would have happened to he and he could just go on with his life. However, he was honouring to what he said he would do and went on his journey.
