What is a medieval romance? According to Joshua Wimmer, it is defined as “a literary genre comprised of fictional works of chivalry and adventure from the Middle
Ages”. This can be interpreted in many ways. The reading Sir Gawain and the Green
Knight is a wonderful example of this genre. It expresses many aspects of chivalry and courtly love, interpreting one’s identity and involves supernatural elements.
Chivalry, in short, is the rules and customs of medieval knighthood
(Dictionary.com). It is also known as acts of kindness or being polite. Courtly love is as it sounds, romances within the courts (between a knight and his lover). The code of chivalry is very well practiced in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Gawain and other
characters.

These specific traits suggest that Gawain and his attitude define his true self. Arthur’s court also relies on the code of chivalry. The members of his court express their true selves as well, without being masked by something untrue (SparkNotes Editors). Courtly love is shown by Gawain because he needs to prove his infatuation for Lady Bertalik and
Guinevere. He must find a healthy boundary in which to show his respect for both ladies. Interpreting one’s identity is also a major theme of this reading. Identifying one’s true self is such an important aspect of life today; it truly helps one be who they really are. Throughout this poem, Gawain is facing the constant struggle of person versus self by trying to prove to everyone he is worthy. He is faced with one single quest, and must do his very best to complete it efficiently. He must do all he can to meet the Green
Knight to receive his blow. On his way, he encounters the wilderness, which made him face things he never thought he could. This proved that he is truly a brave knight.
Supernatural elements are a major contribution to the genre of medieval romances. Supernatural essentially means abnormal, not real, or fictitious.
