Sir Thomas More: The Ideal Utopian Society

The word utopia was first christened by Sir Thomas More in 1516 when he wrote his book on the matter. Although the original title written in Latin is much longer it is often abbreviated to simply Utopia. He raises many questions like: “what would an ideal utopian society look like” and: “how should it function?” After this piece of literature was published, many different ideas on what a utopian society ought to be like if they were produced in real life. For instance, most ideologies today have their own idea of what a utopian society should be like. Personally, I don’t think that a pure utopian society could ever exist. Think of your morning commute, if you are late to work odds are you are going to speed. Although this really isn’t a horrible crime, it is a crime nonetheless. Without a supervisor to tell people what to do, things would most likely fall into chaos quite rapidly. The accountability of the citizens of a utopic nation would have to be absolute. You could not have some people following instructions and others not. There would have to be a strict order set in place by a supreme leader to make sure that everyone was doing as they should. With that in mind, the leader themselves would have to have the whole of humanity’s well-being and best interests at heart when making decisions. They would have to renounce any personal thoughts or opinions they have therefore becoming, in essence, inhuman. People cannot simply take away everything that makes them human however. A solution to this problem could be a very advanced form of artificial intelligence. Artificial intelligence could to govern the world so that human error and human emotion could be taken out of the paradigm. An AI could, theoretically, do a much better job at keeping the populace safe, happy, and docile than a human being ever could. A human would have their own personal goals and flaws that would have to be accounted for when making decisions. But an AI could be programmed to do what was best and only what was best for the society which it controls. It could be programmed to keep the environment unpolluted and tell people what was in their best interests and keep them on a path that would keep them content and productive. But an AI might not be able to feel emotion so it could cause more harm than good. Although it could be doing what was best for humanity, it might not be doing what was best for the humans themselves. It would have to be able to feel, but then we are back where we started, emotions could not be allowed in order to keep personal
