Amatuer, is that a verb that accuratly describes the modern day billion dollar industry that is collegiate sports? The NCAA insists that it does; saying that collegiate sports is not, and should never be, considered a business. Contrary to the implication of the NCAA collegiate sports, specifically men’s football and basketball, have over the recent years hauled in a yearly revenue similar to that of the NBA. But, unlike the Professional league of the NBA; Collegiate “student-athletes” specifically men’s football and basketball players lack the compensation for their services that NBA players get. The use of foreshadowing and tone in Shirley Jackson’s The Lottery effectively establishes the suspense and a sense of dread in the story. The writer holds back on the revelation of what is happening for so long yet there are subtle uses of foreshadowing to prepare the reader. When the characters assemble in the town square for “the lottery”, it creates suspense as a lottery is usually a positive event. The first example of foreshadowing is when the boys begin to stuff their pockets with stones, at that point in the story – there is no explanation for this yet by the end of the story, this event turns the ending into a realization rather than a surprise. There are many signs of tension throughout the story but they are all subtler than piles

First of all, the children are making “a great pile of stones in the corner of the square” (260) and adults are just chatting, waiting for the lottery to begin. Drained of energy, I drag my legs across the gym floor trying to run faster and faster. I keep circling around the gym like a track star in a race, trying to get as many points as possible for my team in this game of kickball. I almost make it to home base when someone on my team kicks the ball like a wild ape and it gets caught by a giant sixth grader. As we are switching sides to play the outfield, the principal came in to yell at some boys who were acting just rowdy and pathetic. Once the principal took them to his office we continued our game of kickball.

That was the only winning venture of the trip. My other two football bets lost and the craps table waited until all my money was out on come bets with big odds until a seven came up and pretty much cleaned me out. While I would never give it up, the $10 win they handed me on the last come bet as they swipe away the rest of my chips is almost an insult. I took the $10 to a roulette table and lost it when the ball refused to land on black 17. Good trip.
