In the articles, Anne-Marie Slaughter, and Richard Dorment, an editor at Esquire Magazine, portray their views on the difficulties on being family care-givers in corporate and government workplaces. Slaughter uses pathos, and logos to portray her arguments on why women cannot have a family and a corporate/government job in today’s society. Whereas Dorment uses mainly logos to address his argument that men too have difficulty when it comes to having a family and a corporate job because some professions are not just male dominated fields but are dominated by women, such as teaching. The women were expected to create a happy home, guard the religion, and the morality of her family. The unmarried and married women who tried to seek work outside the home faced limited employment opportunities because of their gender. Women were expected to only focus on domestic duties and her role were limited to continue living in the man’s world. Women roles were expected to be in line with the culture and norms set by the society. The American culture perceived that women were not intellectually and emotionally stable to be involved in the complex world of work and, therefore, women did not take up leadership and political roles.
I’m defending Mary in the short story, “The Lamb to Slaughter,” written by Roald Dahl. I am pleading for my client, Mary who is not guilty in the murder of Mr. Maloney. Mary would have never murder her husband, because she is six months pregnant. She couldn’t lift the heavy weapon used to kill him while carrying a baby. Mary Maloney was sitting in her living room when her husband, Patrick Maloney, came home. This was the premises of the short story, “Lamb to the Slaughter,” composed by Roald Dahl. Patrick was a police officer; his wife stayed at home, which was typical for the 1950s, which was the time period of the story. The couple had been, so it seemed, happy throughout their marriage. In fact, Mary was pregnant with a baby boy.
Lamb to the Slaughter is an action packed short story about a wife who is let down by her husband and proceeds to kill him as an act of revenge. Obviously much more happens in this story consisting of humour, action, mystery and irony. Roald Dahl is a master of writing short stories in ways that attract readers, draw them into what is happening through using literary elements and universal themes to make the story relatable to the readers. In this story the main literary elements were foreshadowing, situation and dramatic irony, imagery and symbolism which really drew me in and kept me attached to the story. Literary elements are what make a story powerful and attracts readers to continue reading in the story and in this story they highlight the universal theme of Revenge and Betrayal.
In her widely watched 2010 TED talk “Why We Have Too Few Women Leaders” (currently with more than 1.5 million views) Sheryl Sandberg, currently Chief Operating Officer of Facebook (and the first woman to serve on Facebook's board) and formerly Vice President at Google, shares her experience of being one of the rare women in top global management positions and offers advice to women who would like to succeed in their corporate careers.
