Chapter 3, The “Giddy Multitude”: The Hidden Origins of Slavery, in the book A Different Mirror focused the development of slavery in the Americas. Throughout the chapter, Takaki makes many references to Shakespeare’s, “The Tempest”, and relates much of what happened in this time period to the play. Takaki starts outs explaining the arrival colonists coming over as indentured servants. Although they were white, indentured servants were being outcasted by the wealthy white men. Their intentions of finding wealth and land were soon confuted by the discrimination they received.
David N. Gellman is a professor of Early American History at DePauw University in Indiana and his written work focuses greatly on colonial America and emancipation in the United States. As an expert in Early American History, David N. Gellman gives us a strong background on the institution of slavery in New York in his book Emancipating New York and the road to the emancipation of African Americans in the state of the New York. David N. Gellman’s book Emancipating New York describes the process by which the state of New York abolished slavery with a combination of white opposition, black resistance and political changes. The abolition of slavery in New York was an effort of the above-mentioned sectors of society and government, all with differing views, interests and agendas.
While I sat in my room and read this book I found it to quite interesting and when going thought the list this was the first one that caught my eye. I have read many books never have I read an autobiography. I figured since I was in history class this was the perfect opportunity. I was happy with the content in the book. I feel as if this book showed me another side to slavery I didn’t know about, I have always known slavery and what it was about by as a former slave told his side it was something else.

Harriet Ann Jacobs known to the public as Linda Brent and Frederick Douglass both were the victims of slavery and succeed to escape its clutches. As they possessed the skill of literateness, after becoming free members of the American society, they decided to write down their experiences of living as slaves to share what they had witnessed. Consequently, “Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl” is the fruit of Linda Brent’s labor, and Frederic Douglass delivered his testimony in “Narrative of the Life of Frederick Douglass, an American Slave”. It was during the 1850s around the Underground Railroad time when it sent many slaves to freedom in Canada. Some of her cousins were free in Cincinnati, that gave the Garners a great opportunity to escape.
The number of slaves that where imported into the colonies between 1700 and 1800 has allowed the new world to grow in a way that lead to exceptional growth. Some may argue that slavery was completely debauched and unnecessary. On the contrary, slave trade was still a significant stimulus to the development of the colonies. The middle and the New England colonies were smaller, therefore not so dependent on a significant amount of labor. Slavery had played an important role in the development of the colonies.

Incidents and the Life of a Slave Girl romanticizes the agony of being a slave to powerful men. The Cask of Amontillado is a popular and enduring tale of revenge. Now in modern day, The Help, takes in points of revenge and the pain of wanting to get back at those who did them wrong.
Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl by Harriet Jacobs is a story about a young slave named Linda and her personal experience trying to escape alive. Linda is a brilliant black slave that is constantly tormented mentally and physically by her master, Dr. Flint. For the sake of Linda’s two young children she had with a white man out of wedlock, Linda decides to escape until she or her children are bought by close friends or family, so that they may never experience the tribulations of slavery. While the South tried to convince northerners that the master-slave relationship was a good one, Jacobs goes on to convincingly prove that is not the case.
The slave culture has always been a subject that has captivated societies from the beginning of time up until today. It is a very broad subject that has let us explore the many different aspects of slavery, ranging from when slaves were working on plantations to them being used for trade. Many different forms of slavery have happened and all the aspects of slavery have been very controversial for the simple fact that people who were slaves were treated as nothing more than worthless human beings. The culture of slavery has to do with many factors, but the slave trade, it’s systems, the regulations being imposed on the people of color, even when they were set free, depended on where geographically the slaves were located in the Americas. In the system, a child can stay with a caretaker until they are old enough to begin work. The caretaker might have been the child's mother, but soon after, they would be sold separately for better profit in favor of their master. “The mother went down to the grave without ever seeing her child again.” (Keckley 29). Additionally, many of the women who did find love in the system never really got to be with their loved ones because they typically were not on the same plantation or in the same area as one another.
