In most adaptations of the book Sleepy Hollow by Washington Irving, Ichabod Crane, the main character is depicted as a police officer instead of the goofy teacher as the book goes. From the standpoint of the book, a teacher was a fitting position for Ichabod to be goofy and advance the plot by eating at student’s houses by eating, which was his favorite thing to do. This character is great for a short fun cartoon but, when the story is made to bring in a profit and appeal to a larger audience the idea of staying true to the story line changes. Although a teacher might be relatable to young kids and his goofiness might appeal to kids and make them laugh but that will not be as popular with the older generation. The older generation needs action to keep them guessing and engaged throughout the whole show. The idea of Ichabod being a detective changes the whole perspective of Ichabod. This transition could very well be the determining factor when someone reads an overview of the show or movie. Another example, would be how Ichabod’s change in profession would add to the mystery aspect of the show and makes the story more of a suspense show. The mystery theme is pretty much ideal for a series. One of the newest adaptations Sleepy Hollow is a series and Ichabod is a detective with a police officer.
