First they decide what they want to write, and then they create a draft, edit and revise their drafts before finalizing and publishing it. We must teach this process to students in order for them to become skilled writers. Stages of writing process (read slide) ◦ Prewriting: This stage may look different for every student depending on their age and stage of writing development. A kindergarten student may start scribbling a picture and use invented spelling but a fifth grade student may use outline notes. In this stage students can redraft a final copy of their writing. Students need to include all the changes from their editing and revising stage. Students can have peers reread their writing for errors and corrections. Redrafting ◦ Publishing: Students publish their final copy in this stage. Students can publish their work by making a book, incorporating in a class book, or publish it on the internet. It’s important for teachers to celebrate student’s achievement. Finished Product Slide 13: Writing in Content Areas Students can write in all content area subjects. Writing in the content are is the best way for students to explore concepts and ideas. For example students can use the process of writing when composing a lab report, book reviews, history papers or deconstructing math word problem solutions. There are a variety of activities that can teachers can use to teach the writing process in all content areas. Activities: (read slide) Microthemes are “mini-essays” where students summarize or synthesis information. This can be done on a large index card or half-sheet of paper. The RAFT strategy allows students to think about and design their writing before they begin writing. DEJ allows students to write dual entries on related topics. It is similar to a response journal.
