This topic selection proposal identifies an important starting point in the creation of a small group. This proposal seeks to identify the type of group and population that will be served. This helps to clarify what will occur in the group and who will participate in the group. Further, the group topic and rationale for the group will be discussed. In addition, the theoretical approach for this group will be identified. This topic selection process helps the school counseling learner to understand the framework for starting a small group in the school setting. Group Type and Population Small groups are appropriate for elementary school students because they align with the recommendation of the American School Counselor Association ([ASCA], 2012) National Model to provide small group counseling. SFBT focuses on solutions and setting goals with steps to obtain the specific goals (Henderson & Thompson, 2011). With this theory as a framework, the school counselor can help students to identify solvable complaints, decide goals, prepare an intervention, write and agree to tasks, acknowledge positive new behaviors and changes, adjust to success, and end counseling (Henderson & Thompson, 2011). In a psychoeducational small group setting this would work well because a clear outline would be identified so students could discuss complaints, create goals, create and complete tasks, and discuss setbacks and successes. There are numerous studies that have shown positive outcomes with the use of SFBT in the school setting. For instance, one study focused on the positive outcomes that occurred with self-efficacy and social skills improvements using SFBT (Kvarme et al., 2010). Thus, SFBT would provide the necessary framework to support positive change in students’ social skills with possible improvements in other developmental areas in the school
