How a small market can contend in the NBA.

Every team has the tools to win a championship. Some teams just have bigger, better, or simply more tools than others. The NBA (National Basketball Association) is home to 30 different NBA franchises, there is a mix of small and large markets. Markets are determined by population of the area, attendance numbers, the basketball culture of the area, and many other factors like weather and arena size. Every one of these teams, market big or small, has the ability to draft, develop, and build around star talent. Some teams are just better at it than others, but every team has the tools to get the right people to do the job the right way. Teammates need to be able to play together successfully while maximizing each other's strengths and covering up one another's weaknesses. Teammates “need to be able to play together. You need to appreciate your teammates and help them and let them help you." It's the reason duos like Jordan and Pippen, Kobe and Pau, and LeBron and Wade. All three of these duos play off of each other very well, but a team needs more than just 2 players. Teams need a supporting cast to fit their personnel, if your star is a great passer, surround them with shooter or lob threats. The same applies for other strengths and weaknesses, if a star player is a bad defender it is probably best to have tenacious or at the minimum, competent defenders in the lineup with them or have their sub be a competent defender. Small market teams tend to thrive off chemistry and fluent systems, because many of their players are acquired through the draft and have played their career in the same system for the same franchise. The idea of chemistry builds upon a team's flow and rhythm, it can build the momentum that leads to big win streaks and deep playoff runs. While signing All-Star caliber players in free agency would be great, it is not an effective strategy for a small market team Back in the summer of 2010, “the Knicks were the cause of considerable excitement. One of the most star-studded and deepest free-agent classes in NBA history was testing the open market, highlighted by Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Dirk Nowitzki and Chris Bosh.” The Miami Heat (a mid-market) were able to acquire 3 star players, and the mavericks, who are a small market team, acquired an MVP in Dirk Nowitzki. Acquiring a star gives teams a building block to contend, it allows teams to have that one player that will put up the big numbers and be the driving force behind team victories, these are the players a system and supporting cast is built around in hopes of winning an NBA championship. Teams who acquire these big free agents, are able to lift themselves out of mediocrity and into the playoffs and possibly more. As long as teams can get a player to sign the contract they can put the necessary pieces around them to win an NBA championship. As long as a team has a competent front office they can make the necessary moves to free up cap space and sign these types of players. On top of that, they can likely build a competent roster by trading for solid role players, other stars, or even young talent to develop around a franchise cornerstone.
