“Small town, farm kid.” A description of my mom’s childhood. Unknowing if she would ever get out of Ohio or not end up as a farmer, auto factory worker. Education was never valued in her family. Leaving Ohio was a way to never face the reality of what would happen if she ever stayed. Once she joined the military and left Ohio for good, she knew she would never move back. Just standing in the messy kitchen and cooking tacos and thinking about how her life has changed so much was how my mother, Shelly Chavez, coped with this interview.
The strive for excellence is all my mom did. Being class president was just one of the amazing things she has accomplished. Receiving her big women of the year award at the University of Oklahoma topped the charts on the things she has accomplished and became her major coming of age moment throughout her life. “Confidence, being who I am and being able to make a difference.” That is one of the many reasons of how the moment affected her life. Along the way she finally realized that “If you invest in people, people will invest in you.”. After realizing that the world seemed easier to take on than before because you don’t have to give your all when you get nothing in return. Since the world was such a big transition for my mother, she had to learn everything very quickly. One of the ways she looked at life was “If you look at the world in a negative point of view then that is how you’re going to live your life.”. With that being said she had the mindset that whatever she has to go through is better than ever going back to live in
