Smooth Bore Gun Compare And Contrast

529 Words3 Pages

Both rifled bore guns and smooth bore guns are two different types of long guns (small arms). These two types of long guns require the use of both hands to be operated, furthermore each type of long guns use a different type of ammunition.

The main difference between rifled bore gun and smooth bore gun is the design of the inner part of the barrel, which determines the type of ammunition that is required.

One of the differences between the long gun ammunition and hand gun ammunition is the size of the cartridge and the amount of propellant contained in the cartridge (long guns such as rifled and smooth bore guns use cartridges containing more propellant compared to hand guns, meaning more power and energy, hence increased range and power …show more content…

In this instance, the calibre value is equal to the inner diameter of the gun barrel itself. The ammunition consist on a single bullet attached to the cartridge case. The ammunition shot by a rifle is a single bullet which suffers variations in their trajectory (it is not a pure straight trajectory) due to multiple factors, such as the spinning of the bullet, the decreasing of power along the trajectory, and the resistance offered by the tissue or material once it has reached the target.
Smooth bore guns, also known as shotguns, use different ammunition. The ammunition once shot doesn't suffer spinning, this is because the cartridges contains spherical bullets. Also, in the case of smooth bore gun ammunition, each cartridge contains multiple bullets commonly known as pellets.
The calibres of shotgun ammunition vary from 4-36. These numbers do not correspond to the diameter of the cartridge or the diameter of the inner side of the gun barrel, but it indicates the amount of bullets of equal diameter that we can obtain from 1 British pound of lead (453.6 g) so no lead is left unused. Therefore, the number of bullets contained in each cartridge is going to determine the calibre of the ammunition of a smooth bore
