It is a society of corruption and capitalism in the future of America, and many threats have risen -- even in virtual reality. In Snow Crash by Neal Stephenson, this dystopian future of America is shown through the second person of Hiro. Hiroaki “Hiro” Protagonist, along with other hackers and people, dwells in the virtual reality world called Metaverse as a “warrior prince”. In Reality, he is a Deliverator that delivers pizza for CosaNostra Pizza, Inc. of Uncle Enzo. He is also one of the last of the freelance hackers. “Snow Crash,” a drug that anyone could take in through both Metaverse and in the physical reality threatens America. In the beginning of Snow Crash, Stephenson spends the first few chapters with Hiro as the Deliverator delivering the pizzas within a certain amount of time. Stephenson writes, “...once you’ve delivered a pie to every single house in TMAWH a few times, you get to know its little secrets. The Deliverator [Hiro] is such a man” (Stephenson, p. 12). To enumerate on the quote, Hiro is driving with a pizza to be delivered, and is in a rush. However, he knows ways to cut across, using his reasoning and previous experiences. Even though he ends up crashing into an empty pool through a yard, he is still bold enough to get his job done with the help of Y.T. Another example of his actions showing his courage and skill is his first encounter with Raven, who is throwing spears. Although Hiro is told not to try and fight with Raven, he still goes and makes it out alive. His swordfighting skills in both Metaverse and in Reality is shown in his actions. When Raven throws a spear straight at Hiro, “Hiro does not have time to adopt the proper stance, but this is fine since he has already adopted it” (Stephenson, p. 155).
