If there 's one thing Disney knows, it 's princesses. But how have they changed over the years? As times change, so do our values. These changes can be seen through the evolution of Disney princesses: the role models of young children for generations. Are the royal ladies shy and safe or bold and daring? Do they spend their days wishing for a prince to come save them, or do they have their own adventures? The figure of Ariel has captivated many young and old viewers since its 1989 release. Ariel from The Little Mermaid is one of the first creature from folklore to be cast as a Disney Princess. Ariel is independent and thrives of the adventures she goes on. This adventurous spirit is contrary to the behavior required of a princess. Her obsession with the foreign human world is source of conflict with her father, King Triton. She is a character who displays a broad range of emotions. Her naivety and impulsive nature are displayed from the approach she took when signing the contract given to her by Ursula, the antagonist in the story. Ariel is able to overcome the evil witch that was preparing to overthrow her father and was able to find love with a human prince, Eric. Belle was the protagonist in Disney’s 1991 movie Beauty and the Beast. She is the fifth official Disney Princess. Belle lives in a French village with her father who is an inventor. She was an avid reader and was extremely beautiful in her village. Her intelligence was misunderstood by the villagers, who called her "peculiar".
