The book I choice to read was, “Brian’s Winter”, by Gary Paulsen. This book is about Brian after the private plane he was flying in crashes in to the rugged forests of Canada. Brian went through many struggles while trying the best he could to survive in the harsh environment. Some of the biggest events in this story include when he is attacked by a bear, during the major storms and some of his questionable encounters with the wolves. If I were telling a friend about the entire story in two minutes I would say, Brian’s parents were divorced leading him to visit his father for the first time in a long time.
In the book Brian 's winter the main character is Brian from the book Hatchet. Brian 's winter is a spin of book telling the story of him if he wasn 't rescued at the end of Hatchet and had to last the winter in the woods. This book was made to the people wondering what would 've happen to brian if he wasn 't rescued. Brian 's Winter shows how tough he has to be able to survive and make it through the winter.

Frost is a book written by Marianna Baer that tells the story of how a teen, Leena, is attending her last year of high school at Barcroft Academy. She shares a house with three other people: Abby, Liv, and Celeste. They live in Frost House which used to be the only boys' home until they renovated it into a girls' home. During their senior year, they went through a lot of trials and tribulations before they reached the end of their journey. At the beginning of the book, the writing was alright.
In the short story “What happened during the Ice Storm?” showed a theme of maturation using literary elements, specifically irony, symbolism, and the application of onomatopoeias were used to support the theme of maturation. The literary element irony is mostly used in the short story “What happened during the Ice Storm?” originally the boys wanted to hurt the pheasants like the author says, “They stood over the pheasants, turning their own heads, looking at each other, each expecting the other to do something. To pounce on a pheasant, or to yell Bang!” This quote is important because it showed the boys original intent; which was to hurt or kill the pheasants.
Makinzie Moore In Tobias Wolff's short story, Hunters in the Snow, there are three very diverse and interesting characters that each play a huge role in the story. The story signifies that the main character Kenny is ignorant, has childish behavior and is very risky and reckless. He is not afraid to express his dangerous actions to anyone.
Snow Falling on Cedars, by David Guterson, is a story about a murder trial on San Piedro Island during the 1960s. Kabuo Miyamoto, a Japanese American, is charged with the murder of his childhood friend, Carl Heine. Through the use of flashbacks, the author tells about the island’s dark past and the love affair between Ishmael Chambers and Hatsue Miyamoto. Throughout the story, the author uses metaphors and symbolism to express the theme of the story. Though cultural differences and prejudices are present in society, love has the power to diminish them.
Most people remember fondly of childhood, as childhood is an innocent and carefree time. Yet childhood may be a lonely memory for others, as not everyone had the fortune of a loving household. In the essay “Let it Snow” by David Sedaris, the author looks back at his childhood and tells of a winter day. Sedaris does not directly say it, but through his words, one can infer that he grew up in a detached family. He describes the behavior of his mother, and it is obvious that there is something more than what is shown.
In Daniel Woodrell’s novel, Winter’s Bone, the bitter cold of a typical Ozark Winter highlights the harsh and bittersweet lives of the characters in the story. Ree’s quest to find her father interspersed with familial interactions are sharpened by Woodrell’s crafted imagery and descriptions of the merciless winter, and the phenomenal writing which included superb word choice, authentic dialect, and evocative figurative language. In fact, the book would not have the same emotional impact without them. Throughout this finely crafted book, Daniel Woodrell transports the reader to the stark, bleak, and grim reality of the Ozark mountains where the people and the poverty are synonymous. By juxtaposing descriptions of the raw winter and the protagonist Ree Dolly’s bleak life, the reader feels a more intense understanding and connection to the heart-rending plight and events of the characters.
Alcohol Sadness The essay “Let It Snow” by David Sedaris is an explanation of how alcohol can have a lasting effect on a family. In this essay, Sedaris writes about his growing up with an alcoholic mother and her mistreatment of her children with this addiction. Sedaris’ writing proves this statement by sharing about one particular day when school was canceled due to a snowstorm. Sedaris is a well-known writer, playwright and radio commentator whose work often has an autobiographical focus (Faigley 89).
“Winter Dreams” was published in 1926. Francis Scott Fitzgerald is most well-known for his novel “The Great Gatsby”. A common theme he is known for is the American dream and how it is corrupt. Fitzgerald enjoys writing about the poor boy chasing after the rich girl. This story is about a man named Dexter Green trying to achieve the American dream by obtaining the girl he adores.
