The other Wes Moore’s shortsightedness, especially regarding money, is what eventually led to his arrest and the end of his free life. One issue that contributed to Wes’s shortsightedness is that he was easily impressionable. Upon seeing another boy on the street, he was captivated by the “headset… [and] gold ring with a small diamond cut into the middle” (57) the boy proudly wore.
The Negative Influences in the Other Wes Moore's Life The Other Wes Moore By Wes Moore is a non-fiction coming of age story, about the path the Other Wes Moore goes in life that leads him to prison. This story is about two guys that have the same name but end with two different outcomes in life. While one Wes Moore ends up becoming successful, the other Wes gets caught up in the drug trade and gangs and is currently in jail for life. Due in part to the negative influences from his family and living in a community where he is surrounded by poverty and the drug trade, the Other Wes Moore ends up in a life of imprisonment.
Before I read David Foster Wallace’s commencement speech “This is Water” and Sanford J. Ungar’s article “The New Liberal Arts”, I thought the liberal arts degree was a futile degree and meant nothing to society. After reading the passages it altered my perspective. Wallace and Ungar attempt use the rhetorical devices to meticulously explain the importance of getting a degree in the liberal arts by using pathos and the nods the opposition to support their ideals. However, Wallace’s use of pathos is descriptive and engaging and his nods to the opposition are thorough, while Ungar’s is indirect and his nods are shorthanded. Wallace is specific in the way he uses pathos in his commencement speech.
The Other Wes Moore is an interesting nonfiction novel about the challenges and adversities that children growing up in poor inner city communities face. The author, Wes Moore, examines how the support systems and role models a child has when growing up are crucial to their development. He explain that while the inner city children have control over their own decisions, the influences around them all put pressure on them to make the wrong choices. There was not a huge difference in the lives of Wes and Moore while they were growing up, and the end result of their lives could have easily been reversed if it had not been for the intervention of Moore’s mentors and family. He presents this as an essay, selected from his novel Stupid White Men, in which he submits his arguments as a political activist, concerned about the state of this nation. Moore spends most of his time in this selection, proving the sorry situation of American society. His arguments present a current issue that concerns the country today. He aims at politicians and other leaders to make the audience aware of all the corruptness in office.
Animist comics believe in the “pure transparency of content” and intuition. Lastly, iconoclast “emphasizes the authenticity of human experience and honesty.” McCloud firmly believes that all of these types of comics can convey knowledge to the reader and benefit the world. For example formalist comics can be used for science, and classicist can be used for art and literature. McCloud believes that comics are beneficial because it gives the reader a better picture of what the author is trying to get across.
Instead of the traditional and mainstream verbal memoir, David Small chose to confine into an autobiological memoir, Stitches: A Memoir, with a comic medium that details the darkest periods of his childhood as a prelude to healing. Small demonstrates the rough parts of his past that shaped his life and the relationships between himself and his dysfunctional family by encoding these moments into vividly drawn emotions and sensations. Small experienced traumatic things both physical and psychological, yet despite this, he was able to work through it. This way of using graphic text was David’s take on using illustrations as an outlet to deal with traumatic experiences.
In the essay written by Michael Moore called “Idiot Nation” he discusses what he thinks is the problem with America’s educational system and what he feels is the reason it is getting worse. He writes about a few different reasons why the education system is failing due to politicians, teachers not qualified to teach and large corporations. Spiegelman and Bechdel show that comics are even more complex than the most sophisticated high-class art. The graphic novel is a powerful literary weapon that helps authors explain the complicated and subtle nuances that are crucial to the greater story.
Two of the panels are rectangles and the third box is a square below them. One of the rectangle panels overlaps the school door as if is it intruding the black space. As art educator, comics usually have color, however the blackness of the background against the white snow, the arched doorway and gutters space between cubic shapes add dimension and mystery to the narrative. Throughout the book, narrative art is a major factor in the visual storytelling of the life of a teenage girl’s fantasies, desires, peer pressure, spirituality, sexuality, and death. The illustrations in Skim, is a good example for drawing outside the box in forms and composition.

Being the vast genre that it is, fiction presents writers with the opportunity to utilize literary devices in their pieces. These devices help in communicating the message of the author’s work. Several fictional texts use common literary devices such as metaphors, similes, symbols, and imagery. These devices allow for writers to personally involve readers with the author’s message.
Every literary work has its own purpose of existence and no literary is the same. There is always literary work for someone to be interested in. the authors use different techniques in order to attract the readers, such as rhythm, rhyme, characters, settings, characters, theme, and conflict and other techniques. One of the elements that literature allow the readers to use is the imagination in order to visualize what the author message is in his story or poem. Some stories, poems or drama are based from the writer’s personal experience, such as the conflict with they have with society because of their race, gender or ethnicity.
