Introduction:
Aboriginal people prefer the term ‘social and emotional wellbeing’ rather than ‘mental health’ as it reflects the positive approach to healthcare (Garvey, 2008). The term social and emotional wellbeing has been used interchangeably with mental health and mental illness (Australian indigenous health info net, 2017). Social and emotional wellbeing helps to focus on the overall situation of the person along with health, culture, family, and community (Garvey, 2008). Furthermore, this essay will elaborate on the Aboriginal medical services and their alignment with the principle of the primary health care outlined by World health organization. Poverty was also the one of the main hurdles to attending proper healthcare facility. The Aboriginal Medicare service was founded when the Aboriginal people had to depend on the local general practitioners or had to go to emergency department, as Medicare did not exist that time. The Aboriginal Medicare service was established in 1971 in Sydney in the name of AMS Redfern. In the same year AMS Redfern was very popular among the Aboriginal people. Non-Indigenous doctors, nurses, nuns and students operated the AMS Redfern. It provides many healthcare services like medical, dental, public health and outreach services (Marles, Frame, & Royce, 2012). According to the (NACCHO, 2017) Aboriginal Medical Services also known as Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services are controlled by the local Aboriginal community via elected boards of management. Since 1970-second aboriginal controlled health service was also started in Brisbane (Korff , 2016). According to (Ward, Fredericks & Best, 2014) Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community health service (ATSICHS) started many rallies and protest in Brisbane for the independent health service. After that ATSICHS Brisbane was legally established in 1973. Among them, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Community Health Service (ATSICHS) Brisbane was the second established Aboriginal medical service in. In early 1970s ATSICHS Brisbane was formed by a small group of community members and concerned general practitioners but in 1973 it was formally established (ATSICHS Brisbane, 2017). It provides the wide range of health program and service to the Aboriginal people living in Brisbane (Ward, Fredericks & Best, 2014). According to (ATSICHS Brisbane, 2017) the services given by ATSICHS are the general clinic, dietician and diabetic educators, family and child health, antenatal clinic, pediatric clinic, youth clinic and services, social health and wellbeing, hearing clinic and dental. To enhance health and wellbeing ATSICHS are organizing various programs like education, awareness, and enhancement daily.
