Ayn Rand says, “God…a being whose only definition is that he is beyond man’s power to conceive.” When one can’t think for their self, how can one be set free? The citizens of society conform to the belief that as a group they are the great WE. The word “I” is not in the vocabulary of men. The Council of Vocation’s say, “It is a sin to think words no others think and to put them down upon a paper no others are to see” (17). Writing is a sin because it portrays that citizens can think for themselves. Therefore, the citizens are to share any thoughts or feelings with their brothers. One of Equality 7-2521’s teachers said, “There is evil in your bones, Equality 7-2521, for your body has growth beyond the bodies of your brothers” (18). Equality 7-2521 conforms to the belief that he was born with a curse. His teachers and leaders think of him as a strain because he is six feet tall and different than his brothers. Equality 7-2521 says, “But we wished not to be a leader, even though it is a great honor. We wished to be a scholar” (25). The Council of Vocations appoints every man a job they are to serve for the rest of their time. Equality 7-2521 knew and hoped that he was to be a scholar. However, since he is a strain to society, he is appointed the position to be a street sweeper. Equality 7-2521 needed to find a way out. While working in a tunnel he found a glass box that held the power of electricity. He knew that he needed to show the Council of Scholars his discovery. He had confidence that they would appoint him as a scholar so he would escape from the darkness of society. “But terror struck the men of the Council” (70). One of the Council of Scholars members said, “We have much to say to a wretch who have broken all the laws and who boast of their infamy! How dared you think that your mind held greater wisdom than the minds of your brothers?” (71). Equality 7-2521 realized he would not be escaping. Therefore, He ran and found himself in the Uncharted Forest. He knew he had found an exit to the world.
