TRADER JOE’S – INDUVIDUAL ASSIGNMENT 1 Part 1 – Introduction What Joe Coulombe did was opening an ordinary supermarket into the industry but the strategies he took were separating the Trader Joe’s from its rivals. What he did was to offer products targeting sophisticated costumers who were searching for good bargains. The offerings of Trader Joe’s were so unique which are not found at rival shelfs. Another crucial decision he made was to take advantage of recent environmental movements such as the rising trend of costumers searching organic foods. The company also decided on selling private labelled products with lower prices than other brands of the same product.
As in the 1950’s, new products such as dishwashers and washer and dryers were mass produced and this caused wives to pressure husbands to buy the fancy new items. And this push was not limited to just buying items, as it extended into the push for new innovation and technologies. The hunger for new items and the need for new ones propelled 50’s consumerism even further. However the 20’s consumerism was different. Rather than developments in individual items propelled consumerism, 50’s consumerism was driven by mass changes in industry.
POLITICAL - Sainsbury’s performance will be greatly affected by the political factors of United Kingdom. As the government and consumer debts being very high presently there, as a result it impacts greatly on attitudes of customers due to which business conditions experience very high pressure. It has not only to operate in these market conditions but also has to continually develop its business. In general, it can also have negative impact because of ongoing price fixing investigation among the big four UK retailers as Sainsbury is one of these and being at the forefront of this assertion. Allegation can hamper its image among public in market as public feel that they are cheated.
Within this critical literature review, the article which will be under analysis is “low- income families and coping through brands: Inclusion or stigma?” which was written by Kathy Hamilton in 2012. The article concentrates on the coping strategies used by single parents and low-income families to avoid stigmatisation and threats upon their social identities. Therefore, to avoid stigmatisation these low-income families may take part in conspicuous consumption where families may spend a lot of money on luxury goods to make themselves look better, which can give them a sense of economic power and acceptance within society. However, due to the rise of ‘chav’ culture surrounding single mothers, it can be much harder to move away from stigmatisation,
In Attachment 6, this chart shows how $100 is spent in a typical Centralia Supermarket. This chart breaks down the budget and will show why grocery and produce are specific categories to pay more attention to than others. In Attachment 7, the chart shows the association of store characteristics with major food stores in Centralia. These are the results from the first study that was conducted. The participants scores show how Hi-Value is perceived and compared against their competition.
Another company is Sysco, a food-service distributor in the U.S. Porter demonstrates that “It led the move to introduce private-label distributor brands with specifications tailored to the food-service market, moderating supplier power. Sysco emphasized value-added services to buyers such as credit, menu planting, and inventory management to shift” (Porter, 2008, p. 90). Like Paccar, Sysco knows how to make them different from their competitors in the high competitive industry. In food industry, customers is very sensitive with price because they have many options for substitute, so companies must have a competitive prices. However, Sysco decides that they should add values to their products and improve connection with their suppliers.
Appealing to the norms of society has always been a part of people 's lives. Children are taught, at a young age, about the societal importance of education and money. Since this is important in demonstrating a person’s place in society, many people feel the need to express wealth and sophistication to conform to a higher status. Recently however, the diachronics of societal norms has become more casual and has encouraged people to buy items at establishments that are considered to be of lower status. It is this desire for casualness that McDonald 's targets in their ad.

Tesco’s Ownership Tesco’s ownership is a PLC which means Public limited company. Because of this Tesco can easily expand and therefore go global, this is because, if they are a PLC then anyone from around the world can buy shares in that company, thus meaning that Tesco has more capital to invest In their company or other branches around the world, this also causes them to be global. Advantage One of the major advantages of Tesco being a public limited company is the fact that they would have a good status; this is because shareholders would want more dividend/yield from their shares and so they would be spreading the word about Tesco, in addition to this, the more shares people buy the more capital Tesco has to invest in their company to expand it and create other branches.
