Personal Expectation In America

As an American who has lived half of my life in Turkey, I have found myself consistently placed in many different situations that the average ninth grade teenager has not had the privilege, or sometimes disadvantage, to experience. Living in two different cultures that greatly differ has exposed me and helped me see the many ways that social class depends on and is affected by culture, situation, and personal expectations.

In Ellicott City, Maryland, where I originate from, the standard for an averagely wealthy family is a big house, and one or more cars. Generally they have enough income to pay for sports clubs, private music lessons, and cars for their kids , etc. Yet, if a family lives in an apartment, does not own a car and does not …show more content…

If you are expecting people to have big mansions, seven cars, two kids, and diamonds worth seventy-million dollars, well I hate to break it to you but, almost everyone is going to seem poor in your eyes. Although, if you go about life thinking that the lower economic class contains those with no cars and low income then, hate to break it to you again but, there are many people financially and wholly blessed who don’t have cars and receive minimum wage. Disregarding my thoughts on this theoretical person having illogical and unreasonable classifications, the opinion which says personal expectation effects the way you see social economic classes still stands. Setting unrealistic expectations for the way people should live, the money they should have, the amount of cars they should own, is pressuring people to meet expectations that may hurt them in the long …show more content…

Though social classes are based on culture, situation, and personal expectation, I also think our World’s habit of prejudging and grouping people based on appearance and not bank account plays into this. That is based on us, as sinful creatures, judging those around us based on what they own, but this does not change the definition of social economic class as much as my previous points do. Personal expectation: “Believing that something is going to happen or believing that something should be a certain way.” Situation: “The way something is positioned as compared to its surroundings, or the status of the circumstances, or the combination of circumstances at a specific point in time.” Culture: “A particular set of customs, morals, codes and traditions from a specific time and place.” The three aspects of social economic classes which cause the most change in the World’s
