The Great Gatsby, by F. Scott Fitzgerald, is a novel written based off the 1920’s in New York City and narroted by Nick Carraway, who wants to experience the glamorous city. Nick meets high neighbor, mysterious and wealthy, Jay Gatsby, who is in love with Nick's cousin Daisy Buchannon, issues arise because Daisy is married to, unfaithful and wealthy, Tom Buchannon. In the beginning of the novel Fitgerald shows the theme by character development and showing the power and class status two of the main characters have. At this point in the novel Nick has already been introduced as the narrator who moved to New York looking to live the wonderful life. Right off the bat Nick notices the wealth and charm the city has from the view of his neighbors house across the bay. Nick describes his neighbor based on his house saying, “If personality is an unbroken series of successful gestures, then there was something gorgeous about him, some heightened sensitivity to the promise of life, as if he were related to one of those intricate machines that register earthquakes ten thousand miles away.” (2) Nick describes Gatsby as very successful based on the looks of his house and how he chooses to live. Gatsby is also desribed as living a fulfilled life where he made the most out of his money which can be shown by the magnificent house. At that point in the novel Nick had not meant nor heard anything about Gatsby but, Nick learns more about the city and his neighbor, he eventually sees and furthermore meets his neighbor. As Gatsby is driving he gets pulled over where he pulls out a white card to show the police officer. As soon as the police officer recongizes the card the officer disregards the fact that Gatsby was speeding and they both go on with their day as usual. During this interaction Nick, who's in the passenger seat, is in awe of how one person can be so above the law to get out of such a thing. This exhibits the idea that Gatsby is a very respected guy and is essintally above the law but also has a crazy amount of respect for what he has done. As the novel continues Gatsby and Daisy meet and Gatsby sees that he truly is in love with Daisy and will do anything to be with her. Trying his best to impress Daisy, Gatsby shows Daisy his beautiful house, “‘That huge place there?’ she cried pointing. ‘Do you like it?’ ‘I love it. But I don't see how you live there all alone.’ ‘I keep it always full of interesting people, night and day.’” (90) Gatsby is using his money to try to get with Gatsby to show he will do anything to be with Daisy. Despite the beautiful house Gatsby has and the wonderful car and other things he could have because of his money he is still not happy because the only thing he really wants is Daisy.
