Conformity can be defined as a change in beliefs or actions as a reaction to real or imagined group pressure. In the podcast Vedantam, the host, asks Bavel to address one of the most controversial soccer games of all time. During the 1966 World Cup finals between England and Germany a questionable goal awarded to England by the refs caused a debate, as it seems like the ball never actually found its way into the net. The German fans believe that the ball did not go in and the English fans believe it do which shows group conformity. In order to be accepted in the current social society, you must follow a certain set of norms throughout life. Social norms are the unwritten rules on behavior that are expected and established opinions on what is appropriate and what is not. People who do not follow these instilled norms may be casted aside, judged, or suffer a consequence. Society’s expectations have dictated what normal human behavior is that people conform to as a way of life. These norms, however, are not set in stone, so they may be challenged.
Merriam-Webster defines conformity as, “action in accordance with some specified standard or authority” (Merriam-Webster). With this definition in mind, one may discover that it is quite easy to conform into a society ridden with cliques of people and individuals that have similar interest as oneself. Although it may be easier to conform, conformity prevents the surrounding society from growth, inevitably making the society and its people horrendously boring and incapable of being a working individual in the stated society. In today’s society the general attitude towards an individual is conform or be an outcast. It is seen in schools where people who do not fit into specific cliques become outcasts, the weird people. Conformity, in relation to societal norms, happens to be something many people strive to deviate from, yet only few are able to achieve.
