Sociologists are always attempting to understand different aspects of society. One recurring aspect of society are social constructs created within any given society. Social constructs are a reflection of the norms within society that mediate social interactions and behaviors. A common example of a social construct is gender (West & Zimmerman, 1987). It is often defined by the cultural and social roles an individual fulfills in society, unlike a person’s sex, which is defined by the biological reproductive organs an individual contains.
