Gabe Scheloske Mr. Herbert English 2 Academic 21 May 2018 The Vietnam War Although the Vietnam War was caused by the United States, desire to stop the spread of communism, it also had negative consequences on Americans, including social, economic and political consequences, and it helped to shape modern world history. This caused the economy to slow down. President Johnson, had to cut 6 billion domestic spending on Society programs in order for Congress to allow the surcharge. President Johnson, could’ve spent more If he had to not pay for the war abroad. Spending the amount of money that we did on the war caused a unfavorable balance to the trade industry. This all lead to International monetary crisis and threat to our gold reserves in 1967-68. People felt that this threat was an indication that we could not afford the war anymore. Inflation then be came a problem with the collation of the Vietnam war and later the Yom Kippur war. Food prices were increased, then this continued to the oil prices in 1973. The man was that had to deal with all of this was President Nixon. He had a method of ways to fixing this problem. He used various monetary and fiscal adjustments. The United States had its own ideas on communism and felt it was a national threat. The U. S. started to educate the public on communism and the negative effects it would have on the United States. The New York Times would publish articles on communism in hopes the American people would not like them. Because of the United States beliefs in the domino theory and it’s containment policies they may have overstepped their boundaries with Vietnam War. Americans protested the war right from the beginning. Saying it was not our war and it was wrong to send our men over there. Other people said we were fighting a losing battle and there is no way to win the Vietnam War. People protested until the president withdrew our troops. Ultimately Vietnam surrendered to the North and we lost. Many lives were lost and communism won. The Vietnam War was the most costly war to date. Not only monetary wise but politically and in human lives as well. America is still recovering and healing from this war. Psychology it was damaging to the human mind and spirit. It took a toll on many veterans and some became homeless, some had a hard time holding down a job, many had nightmares and lasting mental
