Marijuana is one of the most commonly used illicit drug. Marijuana tends to be known by a variety of names. The names can be pot, grass, weed, cannabis, and hash. Marijuana is referred to as the leaves, and extract of the plant cannabis sativa. Which is grown across the world, and is one of the major recreational drugs within the US. Cannabis sativa contains a chemical known as tetrahydrocannabinol(THC). Results from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) indicate that in 2013, nearly 115 million Americans aged 12 or older had used marijuana at some point in their life, or about 44% of all people in this age group.
Effects of Abuse
Marijuana can not only have positive effects on the body. But with all drugs comes addiction. Some negative effects of the use are not only mental but physical as well. Using marijuana for too long can cause respiratory issues with the body, and cardiovascular issues. The respiratory issues that tend to develop are a chronic cough, and even lung infections. Some cardiovascular issues that arise are from the heart rate being increased for several hours. This can then raise the chances of a heart attack and or stroke. Mental effects of the use are a decrease in motivation, and interest in everyday activities. It is also best for women not to use marijuana while pregnant.
