To Kill A Mockingbird Is a famous novel that is still referred to today. It was written by Harper Lee and published in 1920. Although there are many lessons you can take from this story. There is one that sticks out the most, because it was referred to many times throughout the novel. The most important lesson that can be taken from this novel is that the issue of social inequality was and still is a very big problem.
The book shows examples on how the characters talk about black people and show social inequality. There are still many terms/slangs used against black people at the time. Harper Lee writes, that Atticus tells scout that a n****-lover is just one of those terms that don’t mean anything. (124). Atticus states, “She was white, and she tempted a Negro. She did something that in our society is unspeakable: she kissed a black man” (Lee 232). Although he was mocking the hate between the whites and the black he was showing that there is still hate between them and that it was wrong for a white woman to kiss a black man.
Lula stated to Calpurnia when she brought scout and Jem to her church, “You ain’t got no business bringin’ white children here - they got their church” (Lee 136)
This explains that black people also dislike the white people in the community and disagree with them. Mrs. Dubose said to Jem, “Not only a Finch waiting on tables but one in the courthouse lawing for n*****s!” (Lee 117). This shows that people disagree on Jems dad (Atticus) is helping a black man on a case. They show that people should only help their own race and that is it.
