On May 12, 1983, Suzanne Figueroa was abducted at gunpoint in a child care center’s parking lot after dropping off her child. Subsequently, Figueroa was sexually assaulted and sliced with a knife. Suzanne and her husband, Luis Figueroa, sued North Park, the child center operator doing business at Evangelical Covenant Church, for negligent failure to provide adequate parking lot security. After the district court ruled against the Figueroas, they appealed the case arguing material issues of fact exist to prove the Evangelical Covenant Church owed them a duty of protection. The appeals court disagreed and affirmed the district court’s judgment.
Every human has rights to practice their religions. In this week’s reading, we read about the In Re Brown case. This case is about two felonies committed by the 20-year-old daughter Andrea, who shot her mother Mattie Brown, as she was only the eyewitness to the murder Andrea committed. She killed her own father by giving him a rat poison. Mattie brown was taken to the hospital.
This case involves a possible violation of the First amendment by Kay Williams, a counselor at Greene County Tech primary school located in Paragould, Arkansas. Mrs. Williams decorated a bulletin board within the school with a nativity scene and included the phrase, “Happy Birthday Jesus.” According to an article written by Chad Miller of the Paragould Press (2011), the school received several complaints about the display. Miller (2011) further stated that Superintendent Jerry Noble contacted Donn Mixon, the schools attorney, who advised the school against leaving the display up. Steve Barnes writes in his article Controversy in Paragould (2011) that Mrs. Williams was at first told to take the bulletin board down.
I believe the writer was able to convince the reader due to his points from a Christian's point of view. This can impact readers as it shows that human rights does not actually mean freedom for all but sometimes it is at another's disadvantage in terms of religious
Every child has a right to protection as they need to be protected from harm. this harm could be from accidents such as falling over or from deliberate abuse, neglect, exploitation and violence. By protecting children from these we are therefore protecting them from harm and this is known as child protection. Child protection is important as we should all be trying to make sure children don’t encounter harm. However, there are different levels of harm and there are some children who may fall into different categories which will result in them being monitored more closely as we are trying to make sure they are protected from much more serious harm that isn’t accidental.
The meaning of injustice is defined, lack of fairness or justice. In the film The Help, the characters pay a costly price when they confront the injustice of racism. The characters would pay the exact price in pain if they didn't face it. Today the price isn't as severe if we confront it, as it is if we don't, individually and as a community. The people in the film pay a price when they confront the idea of injustice of racism.
As I watched the documentary “Road Beyond Abuse,” I experienced a whirlwind of emotions. From disgusted and disappointed to impressed and joyful, I felt it all. It truly disturbed me to hear about the experiences both Michael McCain and Johnnetta McSwain endured. I was disgusted that no one protected these innocent children from being verbally abused, beaten, raped, and left to fend for themselves. It was shocking to hear that these children withstood this amount of abuse from their family members until they were teenagers.
I believe that the author’s thesis is about the issue of censorship and how it impacts our First Amendment. The author presents us a two different perspective of the issue. Such as, our practice of our First Amendment can lead us to a place where someone can create materials that we may find offensive. But are protected by the First Amendment at the same time could have people who want to limit offensive material and therefore, through censorship are limiting the First Amendment rights of others. To demonstrate her point, Susan Jacoby, interviewed a small sample of women to gather their perspective about an image from a Playboy magazine.
Tragedy in Child Protection There are many flaws throughout the child welfare system that can hinder its overall goal of protecting children. There have been several cases in child protection that have resulted in tragedy, either within the foster care system itself, or in the child’s biological home. Child Protective Services (CPS) is a government agency that exists to protect children from neglect and/or maltreatment. The purpose of CPS is to ensure that the child is in a safe environment. There are a considerable amount of cases where CPS workers did not protect the children by not placing them in adequate environments.
The concept of injustice has always been something that has infuriated me, especially when experienced by juveniles. One particular example is portrayed in a documentary called When Kids Get Life, which I watched during an undergraduate juvenile delinquency course. This documentary, and the injustice it portrays, ignited my passion to stand up for unjust policies and laws against juveniles. In When Kids Get Life, produced by PBS, FRONTLINE producer Ofra Bikel traveled to Colorado in 2007 to document a story about five individuals who were sentenced to life without parole as juveniles.

The McMartin preschool trial took place in Manhattan Beach, California where a 39-year-old psychotic mother accused Virgina McMartin, ‘the owner of the preschool,’ her daughter, her two grandkids, and three other teachers of molesting her 2-year-old child. The Council of Institutional Investigators, also known as the CII, interviewed the children who went to the preschool. The CII claimed that “more than 90% of the 400 preschoolers experienced sexual abuse” New York Times stated the kids used dolls to show the CII what had happened to them and due to the book Michelle Remembers sexual and ritual abuse was just starting to be talked about and people all around the world did not know quite yet how to handle

Policies are put in place for people to follow not only in the government setting but also in much smaller settings. According to Zastrow and Kirst-Ashman (2016) defines policy as a clearly stated or implicit procedure, plan, rule, or stance concerning some issue that serves to guide decision making and behavior (p. 87). In the social work field policies are put into place so that there is guarantee that all clients are treated with the same respect and are offered the resources that are available to them in their community. In this paper I will discuss policies that are in place for children that are being abused and what is in place to help them. Not only are we concerned with if these policies are working but also how are they being paid
