No matter where we find ourselves in this beautiful world, we are constantly surrounded by space. William H. Whyte mentions several basic factors in his article and film, The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces, which influence the usage of space in a particular area. These aspects include: sittable space, street, sun, food, water, trees, and triangulation. However, not all areas of space can always encompass each component, especially restaurants. Oftentimes, the usage of space will also determine the type of people drawn to it. For example, different sections of seating greatly affects the social life of Basil’s Restaurant located in my hometown of Stafford Springs, CT.
Basil’s Restaurant is a family owned restaurant conveniently located in the heart of Stafford Spring, CT. It is an extremely popular dining area for locals ranging from young to old. There’s always something for everyone, from Burgers and Nachos to Gnocchi Toscana and Seafood Fra Diavolo. The broad variety of food and friendly aroma draws in all types of crowds. William H. on Saturday, June 3, 2017, I noticed a few distinct features about the location. Along the side of the brick building near the main entrance sat two large wooden benches beneath a broad overhang. Multiple individuals occupied these benches while waiting for tables to become available. This use of space gave the impression that the restaurants owners wanted customers to have a less crowded area to sit while waiting. When entering the main door, I observed to my left another wooden bench and several chairs, individuals waiting to be seated or waiting for other guests to arrive occupied these benches. Whyte’s list of key factors immediately flooded my head. The usage of benches and chairs allowed adequate sittable space for individuals waiting to be seated.
