Social Media Social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram offer an easy way for people to quickly communicate through technology. Because technology is becoming more and more advanced, people are now able to access their personal profiles through their smartphones to get things done in little time. While online socializing offers a great way for families to communicate with each other in the world, there is a disadvantage to speaking to someone online. Gangs are a group of people who join together to commit crimes in order to fight against their rivals. In the internet world, even though it is common for people to send each other insults and threats online, gangs are known for recruiting the youth in any possible way. Since the youth are more familiar with social media than the previous generations, a lot of gang members use Facebook and Twitter to communicate with each other in different places. A blog post called ‘“Internet Banging”- Co-opting Social Media for Gang-Related Violent Activities’ by the Michigan Youth Violence Prevention Center illustrated that, “…most social media platforms feature some sort of ‘tagging’ or location indicating feature showing where an individual is at any particular time or place; this creates an easy avenue for retaliation and increased opportunities for violent confrontations” (“Internet Banging- Co-opting Social Media for Gang-Related Violent Activities” par. 3). The essence of Michigan’s Youth Violence Prevention Center’s argument is that social media has helped gangs become more organized than ever before by recruiting new members, and planning battles between rivals.
