Racism in Social Media: Truth or Bias

Racial discrimination is a long standing issue in the United States. To trace its beginning, before the United States became independent in North America, being one of colonies, the United States was introduced the first generation of black African laborers by the British colonists. In later fifty years, some local laws in North America had established black slavery. Within the two hundred years that existed, slavery continued to intensify racism in the United States. This bitter history of slavery in the United States has left indelible damage on AfricaAmerican hearts. In America, ethnic minorities such as blacks have always been second-class citizens and suffer from vary degrees of discrimination in political, economic and educational issues. There is a clear gap between blacks and whites in terms of education, employment rates and average wages. The resulting gap between the racial rich and the poor, as well as the plight of blacks are well known. Racial discrimination in the judiciary is also extremely serious. According to relating studies, in the United States, the percentage of black detainees in jail and those sentenced to death is significantly higher than those of whites. In the state prisons, about 47% are black and 16% are Hispanic. According to a United Nations survey released in the United States, guilty of the same crime, Blacks and people of color are often punished two to three times more than whites. The blacks who kill white people are sentenced to death four times as many as white people who killed black ones. Although racial issues is still one of the major problems plaguing American society today, there are fewer and fewer people who blatantly "racist". The larger the companies and departments are, the more polite and patient they treat ethnic minorities. No one wants to make taboo on this problem. They are aiming to show all the people and towards the economic markets. These companies also apologize to people and refuse they have racism meaning in their ads and posts. These sources all cover racism and racial discrimination issue in the social media, whether showing as news or videos through the Internet. Most of these sources cover the problem of racism towards the black, AfricaAmerican people, and other minorities cover the issue of racism towards other ethnics like Asian Chinese and Indian population. These medias tend to describe these ads and posts in a detailed manner and using official and objective language to describe people’s reactions. However, all quotes used in these articles, except the manufacture companies’ quotes, are from people who complain about the ads and posts. For example, when the Guardian news from the U.K publishes their news about Dove’s ads, they used one quote from one famous American make-up artist Blake, who said “I was browsing on Facebook and I saw this Dove 's ad ... but what I saw." The Guardian News described after posting the ad, there was a netizen asking Blake whether it would be offended if the whites were changing to blacks and she replied, "No, we will not be offended, that 's where the problem lies.” The News tend to point the serious view of the problems and guide the direction of people’s voices going.
