But identity is where the “self” interacts with social norms and ideas. One then lives a life mediated by these
In order to be accepted in the current social society, you must follow a certain set of norms throughout life. Social norms are the unwritten rules on behavior that are expected and established opinions on what is appropriate and what is not. People who do not follow these instilled norms may be casted aside, judged, or suffer a consequence. Society’s expectations have dictated what normal human behavior is that people conform to as a way of life. These norms, however, are not set in stone, so they may be challenged.
One must carefully observe the actions of those who “belong” in society to discern how to belong themselves. Following these “rules of conformity’ could include offering respect to the leader of the group or mimicking those in the group, either by their speech, personality, dress, or general behavior. Even one’s background, nationality, or religion can determine whether or not one truly belongs, but ultimately, group identity cannot be forced. Society and groups within it constantly change and are often exclusive, making belonging for newcomers difficult to obtain and can make those who feel they belong question if they truly do“fit
Social norms are the common and accepted behaviors for a specific situation. Norms can be formal or informal. Formal norms are those that have been publicly stated as some sort of law. Informal norms are often unconscious; they are implicitly understood rules of exchange that most members of a group have incorporated. This includes rules that are based on traditions as well as those which have a moral underpinning (North 1990, Pohja 2010).
Societal Norms Defined In today’s society, there are many social norms that each individual subconsciously and consciously conforms too. Social norms are defined as rules that are either explicit or implicit that determine what is acceptable in terms of behavior, values, and beliefs within a group, and perhaps without these norms, society would be chaos (Vess, 2016). However, social norms are often just constructs and the concept of gender and gender roles is a social construct that seems almost vital to society, but is it? (Smith, 2016).
Helen is a lewd 18 year old. She hates all social norms and aims to break them all by creating her own. She is every parent’s worst nightmare. If I had to describe Helen anymore I’d probably list a number of characteristics she is, but for the sake of this media log the only thing I’ll have to explain is her identity. Helen is at identity achievement.
Furthermore, the pressure to fit in encourages people to group themselves, and live within their group where they are comfortable. In the academic article, “The Complexity of Identity: ‘Who Am I?” , Beverly Daniel Tatum explains in detail how humanity would be much more peaceful and would be changed for the better if people were more aware of the complexities of their own identity and embraced everyone’s identities (349). Furthermore, she spoke about the oppression of subordinate groups of people based on identity, and the way dominant groups affect and are not knowledgeable of subordinate groups and the lack of the opposite (347-348). People are encouraged to accept the oppression
Sociology has its unique continual fascination in that the social interactions between people never stop. Especially in a group, people tend to become assimilated and take on the behaviors and attitudes of the others even if they are passive. That is, people might not even realize social norms when they reach consensus on how to behave on a specific occasion. As a crucial component of culture, norms are usually ignored. For this reason, ethnomethodology is a practical approach in sociology to uncover social norms by disrupting which people take for granted to see how others react.
Without social norms, humans would not know how to act in their day to day life. A social norm that is not extremely popular is letting someone in front of you in line at the grocery store. Many people today have become selfish. We just want to take the quick way out of things.
The Challenge of Fitting In and Finding Your Identity In the book, Born a Crime by Trevor Noah, there is a recurring theme of the author struggling to find his own identity when others only take his race and skin color into account. Trevor realizes that the combination of social class and race determines people's identity and he didn't want that. This book shares Trevor’s stories of his childhood during the Apartheid of 1984 in South Africa. Trevor is a young boy during this time of segregation and felt the effects of it even while being young.
In the article ‘The Complexity of Identity - Who am I?’ , the author Beverly Tatum argues that the definition of identity for a person is laid down by the societal norms and not by one’s own conscious understanding of her or his existence. And these societal norms are the ones that are acceptable to the dominant group of the society. Any aspect of one’s identity that sets her or him apart from others is targeted by the dominants. Tatum has used the terms ‘dominants’ and ‘subordinates’.
Approximately 5 years ago I experienced a major life altering event, I had twins. They have been my heart and soul and I have definitely put many things on hold, and/or taken them off my list of to-do's, so I could give my kids all of me and be present in their lives. They will be starting Kindergarten in 1 week and I want to show them that School is very important even when you are an adult. I, also want to be a good example for them. I truly believe that being able to be a mother has changed me and changed who I want to become.
It is expected that those living within the society live up to and conform to those norms in order to achieve the societal values. Different types of social norms include, folkways, mores, taboos and laws. Social norms are generally learned from an early age without us realising it, and as a result we assume that the norms
One’s identity crucially depends on being able to communicate with others, be it family members, acquaintances and so on, it is stated that our relationships help to fulfill us and contribute to our identity but do not define them. These exchanges with others are necessary in order to transfer over an accurate interpretation of who we are. It is known that societies come to give their own interpretations to describe groups of individuals which fall out of the realm of what they consider to be “like them” and with it provide a damaging image, in order to prevent a damaging or inaccurate interpretation of who we are then it is not only necessary to be able to communicate what substance lies within our identity, but to be acknowledge that originality and uniqueness within all
As us humans we all have our values, beliefs and traditions that we have developed through the course of our lives. We refer these traits to cultural identity and how we fit into society. But this may infer on how we can adapt to one as well. Society is usually a group of people with several beliefs and traits or can just be one. When these beliefs contrast with others it may not be the right one for them.
