The Deadheads is a deviant subculture that is seen as unruly and scary at first glance, however, are very much the opposite. A subculture is defined as a part of a society that abides by different rules and beliefs. The Deadheads have their own beliefs, norms, symbols, and values that differentiate them from other music-based subcultures because of these. In the past “deviant subcultures” are associated with crime and conflict however in the case of Deadheads it’s the way that they stray from societal norms that have them labelled so.
The sixties was a decade unlike any other. Baby boomers came of age and entered colleges in huge numbers. The Civil Rights movement was gaining speed and many became involved in political activism. By the mid 1960s, some of American youth took a turn in a “far out” direction. It would be the most influential youth movement of any decade - a decade striking a dramatic gap between the youth and the generation before them.

The meaning of punk in the mid to early 70’s was a group of people in a subculture that divided themselves from the mainstream due to unfulfillment from society. As time carried on to the 90’s this meaning and punk itself was tarnished and no longer focused on progression. Youth found themselves taking part in a more sophisticated rebellion says Susan Hopkins in her article “20 Years Of Punk”. The tension between punks and the government had ceased for the most part, but there was still rebellion for the sake of rebellion. In the early stages of punk the response was to a social economic crisis.
Figure 1 shows how the hippies sought change without the use of violence. Instead, they used flowers, representing their goal of achieving peace, while protesting the Vietnam War. Those participating in the counterculture movement also believed that the only way to form a new version of society was to completely drop out of the current one (Hill). Visually “dropping out” seemed to be a drastic change in style, unique music and a careless way of life. In reality, the hippies’ goal was to influence the rest of America to ditch materialistic ideas and priorities.
Since the beginning of Broadway, musicals have been used as a social response to the issues going on in that time period. By using alluring music and riveting stories, these shows, along with many more, captivate their audience and grab their attention to the issues that are going on.
