I will never forget the Sociology class that I took my first semester at UT. Professor Hagshenas emphasized on a simple, but immensely valuable character trait: mindfulness. The act of being aware of my surroundings and actions has allowed me to radiate compassion towards the welfare of society. As a Latina growing up in an impoverished community, my passion to empower others has been rooted in the humanitarian struggles that I have witnessed. This drive continues to flourish through the knowledge and experiences that I am fortunate enough to gain. I realized at a very young age that socioeconomic barriers affected not only my family but also my community. Along with this, the legal status of my family made it feel nearly impossible to be able strive forward, which was my mom’s reason to bring my brother and I to the U.S. At a point in my life, I was faced with two persisting questions: do I let the hurdles in my life overcome my aspirations? Or do I use these hurdles to drive my aspirations? I chose the latter and chose social work as my major. Through my social work classes, my love for community development has blossomed and grown to include advocacy for targeted, minority groups. Along with this, I’ve realized that the best manner for me to effectively be a voice of justice will be through law. Specifically, I will continue to advocate for the immigrant community through pursuing a law degree and focusing on immigration law. As I continue to take classes within my major, I will implement what I learn when striving for a law degree to continue relieving vulnerable
