Social work professionals strive to help those that are in need and those who struggle to find resources to aid in their well-being. Individuals fight to be heard, yet their voices are silenced by public officials, politicians, wealthy citizens and others within society. A percentage of the population live below the poverty line and find it hard to receive help to rise out of poverty and live a life equal to others. Unfortunately, those within society have various issues in which they seek out help to overcome. At my field practicum, I read the company’s code of ethics and policy Manuel which provides me with the necessary information to work within the guidelines of the company. As a social worker, the values of the social work profession are my foundation, I will be committed to the core values when caring for my clients. Importantly, it’s necessary for me to be knowledgeable of and adhere to the core values of social work. Such as, “service, social justice, dignity and worth of the person, importance of human relationships, integrity and competence” (NASW Code of Ethics, n.d.). The social work values will allow me to make sensible decisions about ethical issues my clients are faced with. The hospice agency I intern at has patients that has Alzheimer’s, dementia, brain degeneration and other illnesses that prevent them from speaking up for themselves, therefore it is important for me to do what’s necessary to develop awareness that will bring change to the needed population and promote social justice for those of whom I work to help, and challenge discrimination against those in my care. I have spoken up for patients to ensure they received the care they needed, such as changing their brief of receiving medicine that would relieve their pain.
