Every day we base our decisions upon a unique set of values, ethics, and morals. Each moral, value, and ethic sways the decisions we make and are influenced by family, peers, places we grew up, society, and even institutions. This can also vary from person to person even if they live in the same area and grew up in similar ways. In this assessment paper I will be covering my own personal values, the core values of Social Work and how both of these match or conflict one another. I will also be talking about what is and how to overcome ethical dilemmas, and my own personal views of others classes of individuals. What defines an ethical dilemma is a situation, which a person must make a decision from two conflicting choices, and in the end one of the values or ethics is compromised. An ethical dilemma does not occur when there is a situation without choices as to the result. When determining what course of action to take I would follow certain steps. These steps consist of identifying who and what values or ethics are potentially impacted, look at all possible alternatives for the dilemma, determine the consequences of all the options, implement the better of the two, and finally evaluate. Identifying who and what values are coming into conflict help to decide whether the situation is actually an ethical dilemma and needs further examination. If it were verified to be an ethical dilemma, the next step would be to look at alternatives and discover all available choices. After the choices have been discovered, scrutinizing the alternatives for the consequences would be the next step. Scrutinizing the alternatives is done to establish who will be benefited, who will be hurt, and what are the short and long term implications. When a choice has been settled on the last two steps involve implementing the decided choice and evaluating the reasons why the dilemma came around and how to keep it from happening again. In order to be prepared for any future ethical dilemmas in the Social Work profession for others or myself in the profession, I would say having open discussions, role-playing various scenarios, both ethical dilemmas and those that are just uncomfortable, to help understand how to handle and what is an ethical dilemma. Another preparation would be to understand more about oneself, from values and ethics to biases. In the final section of this paper I will be discussing personal views on varying classes of
