Having majored in psychology as an undergraduate, I would now like to concentrate on social work. I realized in my senior year, I could help others more by being a social worker than pursuing a career in psychology. Also, I concluded that I enjoy social work far more than psychology. My understanding of the purpose and function of the social work profession is to empower and liberate people to enhance their well-being. I believe there are many ways a social worker can empower their client. A social worker can be an educator for their client to help empower them. This might involve in teaching the client about resources and how to develop skills for everyday life. By supplying these resources to them it will help the client be liberated and independent. Another purpose of social work is to be an advocate. There are times when a client has no voice, for example if the client is a minor. It is the social worker’s job to be that person’s voice and fight for the rights of others. Not only does social work advocates for an individual, it also promotes social power to produce changes in society and policy making. By making these changes in society we create opportunities for individuals. …show more content…

I believe in order to receive that form of trust from a client; the social worker must understand and listen to their client. I also believe the core values of social work play a big role in the relationship. The social worker has to be willing to help the client and help solve problems. The advocate must be willing to fight for social justice; show respect for the inherent worth, dignity, and human rights of every client. Also, they must be aware of the importance of belongingness and have competence. I believe by practicing the core values with clients will, in return, develop stronger and trustworthy
