History of Social Work The history of social work dates back all the way to 1898 at Columbia University. The field of social work and social workers addressed the needs of all Americans to ensure that they receive the help that they needed. It was developed with the idea to help the poor cope with problems. Economic depression, racism, and immigration increase promoted a need for racial program and organizations to assist those in need. They make sure everyone is treated right and equal each and every day. They help to sort out difficulties in everyday life, and they help people cope and deal with depression. Also, they deal with family and relationship issues and personal issues. They can work in different areas. Some social workers can work in a hospital, helping patients through difficulties with their healthcare in making decisions. All other types of social workers work with families within domestic violence; they can also be a state or federal investigator social worker. Some may even do only research and work as an administrator’s assistant or for social service programs, but they all advocate for social policies to be enforced. The basic median pay for a social worker can be from anywhere between 44,200 per year ($21.25) hourly to 54,000. Mental health social workers were paid $39,980, family and school social workers were paid $41,530, healthcare social workers were paid $49,830, and all others were paid $54,560 in 2012. Also with the varying fields the environments are subject to change as well. Social workers can work in hospitals, schools, clinics, for the government, and even in correctional facilities.
