This process teaches self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
When I graduated from Troy University with my Associate of Arts, I continued to further my education. Barker (2014) in the Social Work Dictionary, states that empathy is “the act of perceiving, understanding, experiencing, and responding to the emotional state and ideas of another person” (p. 139). This summary of empathy can only scratch the surface of how empathy is displayed in an interview between a social worker and client. In social work practice, a clinician strives to connect with clients by meeting them where they are at with compassion and empathy, but how does self-disclosure incorporate into this environment? Self- disclosure in the social work interview brings forward mixed emotions; the issue of self-disclosure will be explored through this paper with perspectives from both the social worker and the client. Empathy Effect on Self-disclosure
I will soon hold a Bachelor degree in Communication Disorders and my studies have taught me how to communicate with individuals from all backgrounds, professions, and social classes. It taught me sympathy and understanding of human interaction. My long term goal is to work with school aged children and young adults as a speech-language pathologist. I have experience in interacting favorably and effectively with children of a wide range and enjoy doing so. I belong in an educational environment and would like to continue on to the school system and contribute to the success of school aged children and young adults.

I want to help children be able to succeed in every way possible because of what I saw my cousin go through. I am willing to go wherever help is needed as a speech pathologist to help people succeed. I do not know if I will pursue a higher degree than masters, but I have considered it as I realize that if I want to help teach it will be necessary. I plan on earning my degree in three years since I will spend my first year studying prerequisite courses which I wasn’t able to take in my undergraduate work. I have attended Southern Virginia University where the motto is “Preparing leader-servants” and a large focus is on developing service minded graduates.
I study diligently and attempt to use all of my acquired skills to succeed at everything which I do. Surprisingly the most helpful course which I am taking is “Achieving Academic Success”. This course has allowed me to do research on my careers required skill set. I am developing skills which are needed to become a successful speech therapist, so of which are versatility, resourcefulness, and communication skills. NOW LET US MOVE TO THE FUTURE After I obtain my Associate’s Degree from JCTC, I plan to go to attend the University of Kentucky, Murray State University, or Western Kentucky University.
To enhance my experience I would like to work with veterans, adult homeless, and the mentally ill. My objective is to be admitted into the Master of Science degree program with an option in Rehabilitation Counseling, where I can grow and take on new challenges. Ultimately, I would like to assume further educational and gain work experience that would allow me to work more effectively with people with disabilities. Most importantly, I would like to work for an agency where I can build a career in counseling and possibly management. I am driven to be the best at what I do.
I also have a comfort working with the elderly due to my grandmother. I have an interest in counseling and school social work as well. I’m looking forward to learning more about the social work practice areas and finding my place. Personal Concerns A concern I have for the future would be choosing the right area of social work to pursue.
