Elf is a movie released in 2003 directed by Jon Favreau and written by David Berenbaum. Elf takes place in the early 2000’s in which buddy played by Will ferrell is an adult human that was raised by elves. He is made aware that he is human rather than elf and travels to New York City to find his birth parents. Walter Hobbs played by James Caan, is reunited to the son he didn't know that he had and is on the naughty list. Buddy must assimilate to New York City and human culture while trying to forage a relationship with his father that does not include putting maple syrup on their spaghetti. He shows his normal as being eating maple syrup with spaghetti, worshipping Santa and enjoying elf games of snowball and even using elf curse words, indicating the difference in language such as son of a nutcracker and cotton headed ninny muggins. The agents of socialization play a large role in his life his elf family “Papa elf” encouraging him to participate in elvish things despite him being human and eventually reaching human size. His self changed when he is told the truth that his is not really an elf but a human. Buddy’s sense of self is taken from under him and he goes in search not just to find his birth family but on a larger scale an identity in which he can call his own although it is just a social idea that is presented by society. In this thinking however Buddy makes sense of why he was never the best at doing elf things. To Walter his sense of self as a father changes because of Buddy’s presence but it also alters his relationship with his other son
