As you sow, so shall you reap. Spoon River is a story where people reveal their secrets after death; some of these secrets are about marital issues, issues about work or scandals around town. One common issue you see is karma. Many of the townspeople face terrible retribution for their poor choices. In the town of Spoon River, a lot of characters face payback for their actions. One of the townspeople who faces retribution for her actions is Dora Williams. After she was heartbroken, she would marry older men for their money and then murder them so she would get the money they left behind. For example, when Dora reveals, “He married me when drunk. My life is wretched. A year passed and one day they found him dead. That made me rich.” After she …show more content…

Another character who faces payback for what they did in their lifetime is Butch Weldy. Butch Weldy is one of the worst characters mentioned in this story because of his self-centered and rude personality. He takes advantage of Minerva Jones “after a brutal hunt” (Minerva Line 5). After he did that to Minerva she had no choice but to seek the help of Dr. Myers, a man known for assisting the “weak, the halt, the improvident and those who could not pay” (Myers Line 3/4), resulting in the destruction of Dr. Myers reputation. In a twist of irony and poetic justice, Weldy claims he “got religion and steadied down” (Line 1). He suffers a horrific accident at work that disfigures him and blinds him forever, and makes him not be able to walk, similar fate to some of his victims. Another township person who faces consequences for their actions is Dr. Myers. Dr. Myers faces retribution for the illegal surgery that he performed on Minerva
